The Madeleine Moment
DETAILS ~
"Memory - all alone
in the moonlight.
I can smile at the old days,
I was beautiful then.
I remember the time I knew what happiness was.
Let the memory live again."
Using snacks , sounds and objects as memory triggers, Rebecca will engage us in a
series of exercises investigating the concepts of voluntary and involuntary memory
retrieval. Marcel Proust first noted 'involuntary' memory in the first installment of
À la recherche du temps perdu, (In Search Of Lost Time) where the narrator of the book
experiences a 'Madeleine moment', a memory awakening caused by dipping Madeleine cake
into tea. We will explore personal and collective memory, you will be taken back to
the old house and other places whether you want to go or not... We will revisit events
such as the hurricane of '87 and the collapse of the Berlin Wall. Bring your own
memory triggers and others will be provided...Be Prepared.
BIO~
Rebecca makes diary drawings. They say things like "Falling Out Of Love is hard, we are all breakable sometimes." The scratchy autobiographical drawings appear on everyday items like tea bags, cigarette papers, and sweet boxes. They are as sweet as they are sour and bitter sometimes, but never twisted. Rebbecca graduated from Winchester School of Art in 2002. She is now part of Kangaroo Court Collective In Bristol and a studio holder at Spike Island. Links ~
