nike how was nike developed? the story of how nike became such a huge success is quite remarkable. phil knight (the founder of nike) took nike from being nothing to a $4 billion business and turned himself into a billionaire. this will explain how he achieved this nike feat. phil knight graduated at the university of oregon, stanford business school. on a trip to japan, phil represented himself to the president of tiger shoes as an american distributor of athletic equipment. in actuality, he had nothing. he quickly came up with the name brs (blue ribbon sports). he was now in business. phil began hawking running shoes at athletic events from the back of his nike truck. after a while, when phil began producing his own nike shoes, he change the name of the company to nike. (click here to find out why) first year nike sales were $8000, and he only made $250 profit on the nike shoes. phil knight phil seeked the help of his coach at college, bill bowerman. all bill did was to try to invent better nike shoes for his athletes. one day, he was studying the pattern of his wife's waffle iron. bill decided to put some rubber compound in the machine and baked himself some nike rubber waffles. then he cut them out and glued them to the bottom of some shoes. next, he gave the shoes to some of his nike athletes and asked them to try them. the athletes came back with good reviews. not only was the traction good, but there was even some extra cushioning. this nike waffle trainer launched nike into the big time! it was the most innovative shoe of the 1970's and it made nike something different. phil had to somehow promote the nike shoes. he decided to sponsor john mcenroe (tennis player) because he generated attention everytime he played because he continuosly sweared at the umpires. by 1979, nike was #1, and it was one of the most popular companies. now, not only did they sell nike shoes, but also other nike sporting equipment. however, nike was caught off-guard by reebok, who rode the aerobics craze to the top. reebok eventually surpassed nike in shoe sales. nike attacked reebok head-on by diversifying their shoe lines to include specific footwear for any kind of sport or activity. nike and reebok were neck-and-neck until nike got a break. a big time break. his name was michael jordan. nike signed him fresh out of the university of north carolina. ironically, michael jordan was not phil knight's first choice. nike had missed out on magic johnson and larry bird, who were the two most high-profile athletes in that same era. nike designed a shoe for michael, called the air jordan. the air jordans were not only unconventional, but illegal! in the nba, black shoes were illegal. the air jordans were black and red. michael was fined $1000 per game, but still kept on wearing them. this was a clever move by phil knight because this generated controversy and a lot of attention to the shoes, which made nike consumers want to buy them. in the late 80's, nike's success rose from $870 million to almost $4 billion per year. it wasn't just the signing of high profile athletes that kept nike on top, but it was how they marketed the relationships. the way to do this was by starring the athletes in nike commercials that looked like music videos. this set nike apart from it's competitors. even though nike was popular, it was dan wieden's just do it campaign that took the advertising business by storm. next, nike produced shoes that reflected both personality and the style of the nike athlete. with the combination of stars and marketing, nike has become the powerful, dominant sports company that we know today.
