Joni Mitchell said, "the muse has gone
out of music, just the ick is left".
Electro is finding humour in the ick.
Audio Sadism is a term used to refer to
one of the first high-profile
experimental bands, the Velvet
Underground. They were accused of audio
sadism because of loud noise and
feedback levels at their shows.
I also have a particular interest in
comics and the word Ultra. Ultra-Plus,
Ultra-Fuzz and Ultra-Supreme. One comic
book, now a movie (like the fate of so
many comic novels) is Ultra Girl. It's
about a little girl that is in love
with the comic book heroine of the same
name. One day she catches a 'magic'
comic book that falls from the sky.
Yup, you guessed it...it's Ultra-Girl!!
So I will appropriate the Ultra-Girl
name for a substation of my own.
I am a big fan of non-formatted (i.e.
non-rotation list) and pirate radio. I
enjoy WNYU FM, CKUT Montreal, and Radio

in operation at Mohawk College for more
than twenty-five years. It was located
in various parts of the college
throughout its existence until it moved
to its permanent home in 1986.
In June of 1997 a great milestone was
reached. The Mohawk College Radio
Corporation, the non-profit corporation
that oversees the operation of the
station, was granted a broadcast
license for a Campus/Instructional
Radio Station. Up to this point the
station had always been referred to as
CHMR. With the granting of the license
by the CRTC an official set of call
letters was issued to the new station,
CIOI. The station would broadcast on
the FM band at a frequency of 101.5
MHz.
On March 23, 1998 the station began
broadcast on FM for the first time. In
August of 1998, after just a few short
months on the air, the station reached
an agreement with the Hamilton Bulldogs
of the American Hockey League to become
the offical radio broadcaster for the
team. The first game aired on October
3, 1998. At the time, the station was
the first campus radio station to
become the originating broadcaster for
a professional sports franchise.
Broadcasting on the FM band is
something the students who first
started the station dreamed of. Many
went on to careers in radio
broadcasting and related fields as a
result of their positive experiences at
the station. |gmt

to popular demand, was brought back
after 18 years of planning.
On September 4th, 1998 at 6:00pm
Central Time, the UofM Campus Radio
started its first ever broadcast. We
would like to thank all the people who
made this dream possible and we hope
the station will have a long and very
successful on-air presence in Manitoba.
UMFM 101.5 has a promise to play
virtually hit-free radio, an exciting
opportunity for all the unique music
makers among us, and the people who
appreciate things fresh and innovative.
As this excerpt from our Mission
Statement says:
campus and community with a distinct
and diverse universe of music and
ideas, focussing on locally produced
programming created by volunteers in a
positive and creative atmosphere."|gmt
